âRed. Iâll keep this brief, I hope.â Meredith climbed onto the bar stool next to Ed and ordered a coffee.
âIâll have another too. I can barely stay awake.â Ed turned to his brother. âHow can I help you, because Iâm guessing this isnât to give me my first ever Christmas present.â
âI understand you arrived with a Tesco carrier bag. What was in it, and where is it now?â
âA . . . youâre serious, arenât you?â Ed raised his hands above his head and yawned. âEither that or Iâm still dreaming.â
âYes. What and where?â
âUm. Shoes. I only brought a small overnight bag and didnât want to put my shoes in with my tidy gear. Why?â
Meredith looked at Edâs feet. âFor f . . . and Iâll need to take those.â
Ed held up his foot. âMy trainers? Why?â
âIâd tell you but youâd get all uppity. Drink your coffee and weâll go and get the bag, and Iâll be taking those.â
âYou will not. Theyâre new. What will I wear?â
âShoes. Whatever was in the Tesco bag Iâm guessing. Have you been interviewed?â
âYes.â
âWere you asked about the bag?â
âNo.â
âWere you asked where you were between letâs say ten and three in the morning? Oh yes, in here drinking. Was that for the whole time or did you leave at any point?â
âI might have had a pee. I got in here about half twelve. Look, John, this is obviously to do with the . . . I think your man wants you.â
Meredith turned to the door where Kent held up two evidence bags.
âIâve got them. They are not happy. They're leaving now, so Iâd stay put if I were you. Iâm going back to the station unless you want me for anything else.â
âAs it happens, I do. Do you have another bag?â
Meredith looked at Edâs feet, and a grinning Kent let the door close behind him as he walked to join them. Kent placed the other bags on the floor and produced a third from his pocket.
âI heard he had a Tesco bag, and now the trainers. Not looking good, is it?â
âWhat isnât? Will you two stop buggering about and tell me what and why?â
âShoes please sir.â Kent held the bag open.
âNo itâs not looking good. Red, give him your shoes then take us to wherever the bag is.â
Cursing, Ed pulled off his shoes and threw them into the bag causing it to slip from Kentâs hand.
âSteady, I donât want to arrest you yet. Come on, what room are you in?â
The three men trouped along to Edâs room. It looked like a bomb had hit it. The duvet was hanging off the bed, there were clothes everywhere, and a bra dangled from the handle of the bathroom door. Meredith shook his head.
âWhere is it?â
âHere somewhere.â Ed lifted the duvet and shaking it, laid it correctly over the bed. âPass me that bag.â As he collected various items strewn around the bedroom, he rammed them into his overnight bag. âWell, at least this saves me a job later.â
By the time the room had almost been cleared there was no sign of the bag.
