“Red. I’ll keep this brief, I hope.” Meredith climbed onto the bar stool next to Ed and ordered a coffee.

“I’ll have another too. I can barely stay awake.” Ed turned to his brother. “How can I help you, because I’m guessing this isn’t to give me my first ever Christmas present.”

“I understand you arrived with a Tesco carrier bag. What was in it, and where is it now?”

“A . . . you’re serious, aren’t you?” Ed raised his hands above his head and yawned. “Either that or I’m still dreaming.”

“Yes. What and where?”

“Um. Shoes. I only brought a small overnight bag and didn’t want to put my shoes in with my tidy gear. Why?”

Meredith looked at Ed’s feet. “For f . . . and I’ll need to take those.”

Ed held up his foot. “My trainers? Why?”

“I’d tell you but you’d get all uppity. Drink your coffee and we’ll go and get the bag, and I’ll be taking those.”

“You will not. They’re new. What will I wear?”

“Shoes. Whatever was in the Tesco bag I’m guessing. Have you been interviewed?”

“Yes.”

“Were you asked about the bag?”

“No.”

“Were you asked where you were between let’s say ten and three in the morning? Oh yes, in here drinking. Was that for the whole time or did you leave at any point?”

“I might have had a pee. I got in here about half twelve. Look, John, this is obviously to do with the . . . I think your man wants you.”

Meredith turned to the door where Kent held up two evidence bags.

“I’ve got them. They are not happy. They're leaving now, so I’d stay put if I were you. I’m going back to the station unless you want me for anything else.”

“As it happens, I do. Do you have another bag?”

Meredith looked at Ed’s feet, and a grinning Kent let the door close behind him as he walked to join them. Kent placed the other bags on the floor and produced a third from his pocket.

“I heard he had a Tesco bag, and now the trainers. Not looking good, is it?”

“What isn’t? Will you two stop buggering about and tell me what and why?”

“Shoes please sir.” Kent held the bag open.

“No it’s not looking good. Red, give him your shoes then take us to wherever the bag is.”

Cursing, Ed pulled off his shoes and threw them into the bag causing it to slip from Kent’s hand.

“Steady, I don’t want to arrest you yet. Come on, what room are you in?”

The three men trouped along to Ed’s room. It looked like a bomb had hit it. The duvet was hanging off the bed, there were clothes everywhere, and a bra dangled from the handle of the bathroom door. Meredith shook his head.

“Where is it?”

“Here somewhere.” Ed lifted the duvet and shaking it, laid it correctly over the bed. “Pass me that bag.” As he collected various items strewn around the bedroom, he rammed them into his overnight bag. “Well, at least this saves me a job later.”

By the time the room had almost been cleared there was no sign of the bag.
